Sustainability + Savings: The Martha's Vineyard Wind Farm

Sustainability + Savings: The Martha's Vineyard Wind Farm Energy Federation Incorporation EFI | Energy Federation Incorporation

It's no coincidence that EFI is headquartered in Massachusetts as they have long been a leader in environmentally-friendly initiatives. The latest accolade to add to their sustainability resume is a commercial-scale offshore wind farm. This will be the first of its kind in the United States and is predicted to save Massachusetts residents around 1.4 billion dollars.

The 800 mega-watt project will lay fifteen miles south of Martha's Vineyard. While it is more costly than a traditional windfarm, the benefits of energy generation in the winter greatly outweigh the added costs. This pay off will account for a 0.1-1.5 percent decrease in monthly energy bills. Next to its clear economic benefit is the environmental-good that it will create. It is estimated that the equivalent of 325,000 cars, a whooping 1.6 million tons of carbon emissions, will be avoided each year by introducing this project.

The Vineyard Windfarm construction will begin in 2019 in hopes of being fully operational by 2021. It is the first of many offshore farms that Massachusetts expects to install. Their ambitious 2027 goal is to generate enough power from these projects to provide energy to over one million homes.

It looks like Massachusetts has made its mark on the clean energy industry and is not afraid to pioneer a road ahead for other states to follow. We are very proud to be based in an energy-conscious state that shares our mission while pushing the boundaries to protect our Earth.
