EFI's favorite day of the year is Energy Efficiency day because it brings the nation together to reflect on one of the most important topics today: Climate change. It's among us and a study from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is predicting it's coming sooner rather than later. That's why EFI believes it's essential to use the world's natural resources to reduce CO2 emissions and make EE products and programs affordable and accessible.
On October 5th (EEDAY2018), EFI and 10 of our utilities partnered with Nest to provide a one day flash sale on EFI's online marketplaces. Customers received up to $150 off the Nest's Learning Thermostat and up to $120 off the Nest E. By selling 6400+ thermostats, we were able to reduce utility bills by $73,000 dollars each year. Talk about savings! With collaboration by the three parties, we surpassed our goal by 125%. Just through a one day sale, we reduced approximately 38,000 pounds of CO2 emissions. The success of our mission doesn't stop there, EFI is proud to reflect on the contribution to Nests savings of an estimated 25 billion KWh since 2011.
Nest thermostats alone have saved customers an average of 11% on their heating bills by allowing them to monitor their energy usage. The ultimate accomplishment is to have everyone using an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat, which would increase savings to about 15 trillion BTU's of energy and $740 million dollars per year, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 13 billion pounds annually. This is equivalent to the emissions of 1.2 million vehicles!
IPCC stated that if gas emissions continue to stay the same, our atmosphere will increase to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels by 2040, which will escalate droughts and poverty. Previous studies had estimated that if we reach 3.6 degrees, it would be the most drastic effects of climate change. We all have the power to change this all it takes is awareness of where we are, where we are headed, and the drastic consequences we all face if nothing changes.
That is why EFI and utilities all over the nation have a responsibility to take action and bring awareness to people within our reach. For 36 years, we have partnered together to provide customers with the choice of implementing energy efficient technology to lessen gas emitting strategies. EFI is incredibly proud of the impact we have made, but we know there is more work to be done, our mission never quits!
This is not the beginning of EFI's contribution and it most certainly won't be the end. It is our mission to impact customers with disruptive technology from early adopters to laggards to enhance savings and improve the environment.
